Pre-Valentine’s Day Program
When the only sound in the empty street Is the heavy tread of the heavy feet That belong to a lonesome cop I open shop When the moon so long has been gazing down On the wayward ways of this wayward town That her smile becomes a smirk I go to work Love for sale Appetizing young love for sale Love that's fresh and still unspoiled Love that's only slightly soiled Love for sale - Cole Porter, Love for Sale
To further quote Cole Porter, “If you want the thrill of love, I’ve been through the mill of love, old love, new love, every love but true love.” Well, as the day after our new program will be Valentine’s Day, we will present a musical listen to every love, including true love. Some marvelous vocals and instrumentals expressing the full gamut of emotions commonly known as love. From heartwarming ballads to heart-wrenching break-up songs, we will hear them all.
We will play several version of Love for Sale, including Cyrille Amiee’s, https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8htJVyavMvo and Cecile Taylor’s.
My funny valentine... Sweet, comic valentine... You make me smile with my heart Your looks are laughable, unphotographable Yet you're my favorite work of art Is your figure less than Greek? Is your mouth a little weak? When you open it to speak, Are you smart? But don't change a hair for me Not if you care for me Stay little valentine Stay Each day is valentine's day. - Richard Rodgers and Lorenz Hart, My Funny Valentine
And, of course, we will present several versions – both vocals and instrumentals of Rodgers’s and Hart’s My Funny Valentine from the 1937 musical Babes in Arms, including those by Miles Davis and Chet Baker.
Tune in to find out about the rest.
