Pre-Valentine’s Day Program

When the only sound in the empty street
Is the heavy tread of the heavy feet
That belong to a lonesome cop
I open shop

When the moon so long has been gazing down
On the wayward ways of this wayward town
That her smile becomes a smirk
I go to work

Love for sale
Appetizing young love for sale
Love that's fresh and still unspoiled
Love that's only slightly soiled
Love for sale

- Cole Porter, Love for Sale

To further quote Cole Porter, “If you want the thrill of love, I’ve been through the mill of love, old love, new love, every love but true love.” Well, as the day after our new program will be Valentine’s Day, we will present a musical listen to every love, including true love. Some marvelous vocals and instrumentals expressing the full gamut of emotions commonly known as love. From heartwarming ballads to heart-wrenching break-up songs, we will hear them all.

My funny valentine...
Sweet, comic valentine...
You make me smile with my heart
Your looks are laughable, unphotographable
Yet you're my favorite work of art
Is your figure less than Greek?
Is your mouth a little weak?
When you open it to speak,
Are you smart?
But don't change a hair for me
Not if you care for me
Stay little valentine
Stay
Each day is valentine's day.

- Richard Rodgers and Lorenz Hart, My Funny Valentine

And, of course, we will present several versions – both vocals and instrumentals of Rodgers’s and Hart’s My Funny Valentine from the 1937 musical Babes in Arms, including those by Miles Davis and Chet Baker.

WPFW 2020 Winter Fund Drive

One last thing, Thursday 13 February 2020 will be the first Morning Brew – Classic Jazz Edition of WPFW’s 3 week Winter Fund Drive. We have a goal of almost $2,000 per show. With your help and support, we will make this goal.

Chocolate, roses, even a mega-spendy, $$$ dinner and/or show, are all ephemeral. Here today, gone tomorrow. Even the memories fade with time. Why not give your valentine the gift that keeps on giving. Support WPFW; we will be here for your sweetie day after day, week after week, month after month. And speaking of month after month, please consider becoming a WPFW sustainer. You pick a yearly amount. We will bill your credit card 1/12th of that amount each month until you tell us otherwise.

Moreover, with donations of various amounts you can receive a Morning Brew – Classic Jazz Edition thank you gift: tees, caps and mugs. See the post “SWAG, Again” for details, https://morningbrew-classicjazz.com/?p=338. Just think: your Valentine in a Classic Jazz Edition tee-shirt, you in your Morning Brew baseball cap, each of you with your favorite morning brew in your new Morning Brew – Classic Jazz Edition mugs, gazing into each others eyes while listening to me spinning loving ballads. You just cannot get more romantic than that.
