My Favorite Things

I am excited to announce that this coming Thursday, 13 November 2019 will be a very special program to mark the launch of this website and the companion twitter feed at http://twitter.com/morningbrew_CJE. To start off, I will be playing a version of John Coltrane performing My Favorite Things, that I have yet to present to loyal listeners. The performance will be from John Coltrane Live in Japan on Impulse, http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Live_in_Japan_(John_Coltrane_album), recorded 22 July 1966 at Sankel Hall in Tokyo, Japan. It clocks in at 57:19 in length, and thus, will encompass the entire first hour of the show.

Jim Dombrouski

I dedicate this presentation to Jim Dombrouski, the former programmer and host of Morning Brew – Classic Jazz Edition, who started the tradition of opening with Coltrane playing My Favorite Things. I first met Jim at a small gathering of programmers working on a not-to-be-disclosed project that ultimately die a slow death, but friendships that developed have endured. I my early days of sitting in for other programmers, Jim trusted me at the reins of the Classic Jazz Edition. I owe a great deal of thanks and gratitude to Jim. Thank you, Jim!

Jason Moran, Black Stars

In the following hours, I will start with a recap of an excellent concert I heard this past Saturday evening at the John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts’s Family Theater, Jason Moran + Bandwagon with saxophonist Ingrid Laubrock. The performance was entitled Black Stars, based on a 2001 Bandwagon release featuring the legendary Sam Rivers as guest on saxophones, flute and piano, http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Black_Stars_(album). Jason Moran, appropriated the title for a series of writings that his mother was editing at the time. At the concert, German-born, Brooklyn-based Ms. Laubrock took Sam Rivers’s place on reeds; however, as Mr. Moran remarked about the first time they work together on this project, Ms. Laubrock brought a freshness equal to what Mr. Rivers brought to the recording project. High praise!

This Classic Jazz Edition program will feature, in a yet to be determined order: 1) music the original Black Stars CD, other projects by Jason Moran, other Bandwagon CD’s, other music by Mr. Moran’s Bandwagon bandmates, Tarus Mateen, http://www.tarusmateen.com/, and Nasheet Waits, http://nasheetwaits.com/, other music by Ms. Laubrock, other music by Mr. Rivers, and music by Mr. Moran’s two mentors, Jaki Byard, http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Jaki_Byard and Andrew Hill, http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Andrew_Hill_(jazz_musician), plus music by Greg Osby, the producer of Black Stars and with whom Mr. Moran first recorded, www.allaboutjazz.com/new-directions-greg-osby-blue-note-records-review-by-jim-santella.php.

Closing

If remaining time permits, we will conclude with a version or two of My Favorite Things by other jazz artists.

Stay tuned!
